Today, Grants Pass remains an important center for education and industry with numerous businesses including Nike Incorporated (the world's largest sporting goods company), Intel Corporation (the largestMicroelectronics company), Oracle Corporation (the world's second largest computer software company) and Kaiser Permanente Medical Center headquartered there along with several smaller hospitals including Sisters Hospital and Providence HealthCare System which provides comprehensive care to both rural residents as well as urban dwellers throughout central Oregon’s Willamette Valley region

Grants Pass began as an Indian settlement called Shiloh on the upper Willamette River in 1847. In 1851, Captain David Thompson founded the town of Grants Pass on land granted by Governor John McLoughlin to John Sutter for his Rancho San Miguel de la Plata (later Grant's Ranch). On July 17, 1850, Grant's Donation Land Act was passed and designated 1/3 of present-day Oregon as grant land to American settlers. The first post office at Grants Pass was established on October 10, 1850. The name of the original town was changed to its current name on February 11, 1853 when it became a district seat under territorial government with headquarters located in Portland. In 1863, when Oregon became a state, Grants Pass became an unincorporated community within Multnomah County and remains so today. A courthouse and jail were built here in 1871-72; however they have since been demolished or moved away from their original locations due to changes in county zoning laws. On November 16th 1906 a large fire destroyed most of downtown GrantsPass including what is now known as "The Brewery" building which stood near Third Avenue and University Street Original downtown buildings still standing today are: First Methodist Church (now Southgate United Methodist Church), Second Presbyterian Church (now Mercy Baptist Church), Union Block (now Fourth Avenue Building), Railroad Tracks & Depot (now Hillside Coffee House) and many other historical landmarks
Grant Pass was founded in 1853 by Judge James Fenton. It became the county seat of Grant County in 1865. The town of Grants Pass grew up around the courthouse and schoolhouse, and had a population of about 100 people in 1870. The first store at Grants Pass opened in 1875. In 1886, the legislature created a new county, Multnomah County, and Grant Pass became its county seat. The city of Grants Pass began to grow rapidly after World War II and reached its peak population ofabout 200 people in 1970. However, the city's economy collapsed during the late 1980s and 1990s as a result of changes in the local labor market.
