In 1870 the Grant family donated land to create a college campus which became Oregon State University-Grants Pass (OSU-GP). OSU-GP was renamed Oregon State University on November 11, 1943 after Governor Neil Abercrombie's decision to rename all state institutions after generals or statesmen who had served in World War II (see also: Regents of Oregon).
