Grant Pass, Oregon is a town in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 8,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. Grant Pass is located on the banks of the Willamette River and has a history as one of the most remote towns in Oregon. The first Europeans to visit Grant Pass were led by Captain John McLoughlin in 1846 and they named it "Fremont" after General George A. Washington's army which had passed through the area earlier that year. The original post office was established in 1853 and served until 1905 when it was replaced by Grants Pass Station. In 1898, William Mercer built a sawmill here which became one of the largest mills in Oregon and produced wood for export until its closure in 1978. Grant Pass first became an agricultural center with irrigation systems being developed here in the early 1900s. Today, Grant Pass is known for its wine industry with many wineries located within minutes of town limits including: Anderson Vineyards (founded 1976), Bridgeport Winery (founded 1990), D’Angelo Vineyards (founded 1998), Ellis Wines (founded 2009), Golden Gate Cellars (founded 2002) and Rogue Valley Wines (founded 2006).
