In the early 1800s, Grants Pass, Oregon was an important town in the Rogue Valley. Settlement of this region began in 1847 when the United States government purchased land from the Umpqua tribe for $1 million. The town grew rapidly and by 1860 it had a population of over 2,000 people. One of the first businesses in Grants Pass was a gunsmith named John Sutter. Sutter became well-known for his pistols and rifles, and his shop is still in operation today. During World War II, Grant Park served as a training ground for Oregon National Guardsmen. During the war, local residents also built up stockpiles of weapons to be used against Japanese forces. Today, Grant Park is home to several museums including the Gunsamerica Museum and Hall of Fame which tells the story of firearms and ammunition dating back to 1848. In addition to its historical significance, Grant Park has also become a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful landscape and scenic views.
