The city of GrantPass was founded on November 12, 1907 by Judge Wm Halsey and Dr Jens Jacobsen as a result of an effort by local citizens to encourage new settlers adjacent to their agricultural communities and businesses. At that time only 150 people lived within five miles (8 km) of Grants Pass proper; but by 1912 its population had grown to 3200 with 6 schools and 16 businesses In 1916, when World War I began, GrantPass became one of several towns along the US-Oregon border which closed down their doors to refugees because they were not compliant with wartime curfew laws In 1942 during World War II(), after being captured by Japanese forces at Battle Of Midway (), President Franklin D Roosevelt dedicated Mount Shasta National Monument () near Grant pass as a result of his decision (). Many civilians were killed or wounded during this battle including many women who risked everything for their husbands and children
In 1851, the United States Congress passed an act to create a new territory consisting of present-day Oregon and parts of Washington and Nevada. The first governor of this territory was John McLoughlin. The act also created the current state of Oregon.
