It was renamed for its founder - JT Thomson - following his death in 1925. The first store opened in 1907; the post office has been open since 1912. The community grew rapidly during World War I because many local farmers produced food for military troops stationed nearby; by 1919 it had more than 10 businesses and 100 residents. After the war ended, growth slowed until the late 1940s when oil exploration started up near Grants Pass; this led to increased development along Highway 97A which bisected Grant Pass en route between Bend and Hood River Valley townships. Since 1990 much attention has been given to protecting the grant pass watershed with Comprehensive Land Management Plans (CLMPs). A Master Plan for Grants Pass was adopted on May 26, 2002; update plans are currently being developed which will provide for an additional 2 million SF (2 hectares) over 10 years toward 2030 housing needs alone!

During World War II Grants Pass was an important military site providing food for troops stationed throughout the Pacific Northwest; it also housed 919 men from 97 different units who were employed at various industries including aircraft production, shipbuilding and mining during that time period In recent years Grants Pass has experienced growth with several new businesses opening up along with development of several residential areas including an urban park complete with soccer fields, basketball courts etc
The Grants Pass area was settled in the late 1800s by pioneers from Oregon and Northern California. In 1885, the US Army founded a military post at Grant Pass after surveying the area for a potential site for an artillery fort. The Post served as a garrison until it was closed in 1913. In 1912, the USGS opened its first office in present-day Grants Pass and began issuing maps of the region. In 1916, the town of Grant Pass was established on the southeast bank of Clearwater River adjacent to present-day U.S. Route 97. After World War II, many agricultural families left Grants Pass for more developed areas in California and elsewhere in Western Oregon. However, some people returned to live in GrantPass during this time period and continue to maintain connections with their community today.
