In 1879, ranches were granted licenses to sell goods to miners and cattlemen on both sides of the Snake River. By 1880, there were about 25 stores and restaurant in Grants Pass with an estimated population of 1,000 people. Gold mining began around this time but it proved difficult to extract significant amounts of gold from these hillsides covered with rock so deep that shafts could not be sunk without blasting; although some men did find fragments of silver while prospecting below ground surface through 1898-1900 boom times when Eocene rocks lay exposed offshore along riverbanks near present day: grants pass coal mine opened 1899
