Grant Pass, Oregon is a small town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The population was 9,342 at the 2010 census. It has been a seat of government for both the county and city of Grants Pass since 1896. The town is located on the banks of the Grande Ronde River and is about an hour's drive from Portland. The first European to visit Grant Pass was Captain George Vancouver on July 3, 1792. He named it Fort George after Prince George, Earl of Cumberland who had accompanied him on his journey across North America. In 1811, Colonel John Cushing established a military post at what is now Grant Pass while he built his wagon road between Walla Walla and Kamloops through present-day Grant Pass. On December 8th, 1812 General David Astor passed through Grant Pass with his army during their way to battle against Mexico in California. In 1827, William Halsey founded the Pacific Fur Company at Grants Pass where he conducted fur trade operations until its closure in 1840. From 1861-1865 grants pass wasthe site of several skirmishes between Union troops and Confederates as part of the American Civil War effort to keep Oregon open for slavery under President Abraham Lincoln’s administration. During World War II GrantsPass played an important role in secret production by Boeing Aircraft plants at Billings AFB and Seattle WA as well as other nearby locations making it one oftwenty cites nationwide designated for “Arsenal Grade Uranium”production due to its proximity to nuclear weapons production sites aroundthe world during that time period After World War II GrantsPass reverted back to its agricultural roots with many local farmers adopting organic methods However overpopulation has caused some downtown areas such as Elmore Square degenerating into run down areas while new development continues upriver near Interstate 5
Grant Pass was founded in 1855 by the Lewis and Clark Expedition as a trading post on the banks of the Klamath River. In 1862, Grant Pass became part of the U.S. state of Oregon and was renamed after General George Custer, who died in battle at Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. The city of Grants Pass grew up around the town square, which is still a popular tourist destination today.
