Gladstone, Oregon is a small town in Butte County, Oregon, United States. The population was 745 as of the 2010 census. Gladstone is located on the Snake River east of Coeur d'Alene and north of the Mount Hood National Forest. The area around Gladstone was first inhabited by the Klamath people in 1821-22. It became part of Nevada when that state acquired land from California in 1864. The town site was platted in 1903 by Waddell James Gladstone and Fenton Cranch, both promoters of mining and ranching in Butte County. The first post office at Gladstone opened on December 12, 1903, under the name Nelsonville. In 1907, it changed its name to Gladstone after Waddell James Gladstone's grandson and namesake. By 1910, most of what is now Butte County had been acquired bylas oil rigs operating out of Vancouver Island; however, following an injunction from the US District Court for Oregon against such activity, some drilling operations continued until 1914; these were finally stopped with new federal regulations enacted that year limiting production to about one million barrels per day (bm/d). During World War I there were also armament plants established at nearby Anaconda which produced machine guns and artillery pieces for use by American forces fighting onthe Western Front; but they closed after hostilities ended without any significant involvement by local residents or property owners. In 1919-1920 a school was built adjacent to what is now Eastern Avenue near today's downtown core; this served as the only school within a radius larger than Ridgemont until 1957 when Valley View Elementary School began serving students in eastern parts of Butte County including present-day Gladston
