Gladstone is a small town in the Deschutes River Valley of Oregon, United States. The population was 3,724 at the 2010 census. Gladstone is part of the Eugene–Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gladstone was named for Sir John Gladstone, 1st Baronet (1809-1875), an English statesman who served as Prime Minister in 1855 and 1859-60 and as Foreign Secretary in 1855-56. The first people to live here were Native Americans who hunted game along the banks of the Deschutes River. In 1865, William Hargrave built a log cabin on his farmstead which became the nucleus of what would become Gladstone. He named it after his friend, Lord Palmerston, 2nd Viscount Palmerston (1768-1840). The village grew slowly until 1907 when a hydroelectric power plant was built near present day downtown Gladstone by J.P Morrison & Son ltd.. At that time there were only 10 residents living in what is now downtown Gladstone. The first post office was established in 1909 and continued serving until 1959. It was located on Main Street between Second Street and Third Street; today it is east of First Street on Trout Lake Road. The first store opened herewas called "Hargrave's Store". The name changed to "Gladstone Hardware" before becoming "Gladestone Records." In 1949 Wm Dooley bought the business from Mr Hargrave and added records sales to their operations until he sold it to P C Carlson in 1969. later renamed PC Music Corporation Today, downtown Gladstone has several restaurants including Baja Fresh Mexican Grill, Thai House BBQ & Steakhouse, Grilled Cheese Shop and Cowboy Joe's Barbecue Restaurants as well as numerous boutiques including Creative Clothing Boutique and Home Goods Outlet Center
