In 1872, George Washington Gladstone donated land to become what would later become Gladstone Park. He believed that this park would be a place where people could enjoy nature while still having access to education and business opportunities. In 1909, George Washington’s grandson named him president of Oregon State University (OSU). As president of OSU, George Washington helped to create one of America’s first public universities. He also made donations which allowed for growth at OSU into a major educational destination for students across Oregon and beyond. Over time, OSU became one of America’s leading universities both domestically and abroad. In 2003, OSU was renamed “George Washington University” in honor of President GW’s legacy on campus. Throughout its history as a small farming community located close to two national monuments – Mount Hood National Monument & Multnomah County Regional Park – Gladstone has been an important center for learning about natural sciences & humanities in western Oregon (& much farther east). Today many locals refer to their childhood home as “the old days” because so much has changed since then!
Gladstone was founded in 1877 by the brothers W.C. and Alfred Gladstone. The Gladstones were early settlers in Oregon, coming from Scotland and England. After a years of farming, they opened a store in 1879. In 1880, they married Anna Journell and started a family. The Gladstones became involved in politics and served as members of the Oregon General Assembly from 1886 to 1890. They also ran for office twice but were unsuccessful both times. In 1893, Anna died suddenly; the Gladstones adopted their son, Willie H., as their new daughter-in-law. In 1902, the Gladstones moved to Portland; their store remained open until 1955. They were one of the founding families of Portland State University and are buried there alongside their children Willie H., Joan R., Wanda A., and David M..
