By 1900, however, local mills had closed down or been replaced by larger ones so that most residents engaged in agriculture or commerce rather than manufacturing. With few exceptions they have continued to do so since then; except for a brief period during World War II when industry revived due to wartime needs here but ultimately declined again because of low commodity prices
