Gladstone, Oregon was founded in 1876 by James Gladstone and his wife Anna. The town was named after the Gladstone River which flows through the area. The first white settlers arrived in 1877 and began to build homes. By 1880, the population of Gladstone had grown to around 50 people. In 1912, the community was renamed to Oregon City after Oregon Statehood. In 1950, Oregon City merged with nearby Grants Pass to form a larger city called Portland.
