Gladstone, Oregon is a small town located in the Klamath Mountains of southern Oregon. The community was founded by George Gladstone in 1879. Gladstone was originally named "Horseshoe Bend." George Gladstone and his wife, Fannie, settled in the area around what is now Gladstone in 1879. They began farming and ranchers followed soon after. In 1914, George died and Fannie took over the business operation. She continued to run it until her death in 1978. The most famous resident of Gladstone during its early years was Will Rogers who spent much time hereabouts when he was not traveling or filming movies. He donated land for a school and library on which the current town hall building is built. In 1926, Gertrude Atherton made an appearance at a public dinner given by local officials at the new courthouse square south of town where she performed music while wearing an Indian headdress (a scene from silent movie "Drums Along The Rockies"). Atherton also conducted some services at cemetery there before moving back to California to live out her remaining days with her husband Royden Sayers Atherton III shortly thereafter. Gladstones main industry up until World War II was agriculture but today there are few residents working within that industry as well as many others contributing to the local economy through trade, services and tourism opportunities available throughout Southern Oregon's beautiful landscape!
