Gladstone, Oregon is a small town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The population was 1,898 as of the 2010 census. Gladstone is located on the right bank of the Multnomah River and is bordered by Ladd to the south and east, Grant to the north, and Sherman to the west. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2 km²), all land. The first Europeans to visit Gladstone were traders from Russia who followed what they called "the great Columbia River Road." In 1846, George Vancouver explored this region with his squadron of ships and named it Fort Vancouver after his Canadian home city of Vancouver. The first white settlers reached Gladstone in 1872 when John Dallimore purchased 640 acres (250 ha) near present-day downtown for $4 per acre ($40 per hectare). Dallimore named his new community "Gladstone" after British statesman Sir William Gladstone who had been critical of American expansionism at that time. In 1886, Grower's Chronicle reported that "the citizens are getting along well with each other," adding that there were no problems related to intermarriage or assimilation into general society yet because there was still much frontier living left to do; "it will take some time before we can all become 'civilized.'" By 1912, however, one resident noted that many residents did not speak English well enough even for basic social functions such as going shopping or dinner: "[T]here are few people in town who can understand us." In 1909–10 local newspaper editor Harry Hanks donated an alphabetical list of local businesses found only on microfilm at several libraries across Oregon which he titled "A History Of Businesses In Gladstonian Village", making Gladstone one of only a handful communities in America where early business histories have been preserved intact on paper. At various points over decades various civic organizations have sprung up around Gladstone including an agricultural fairgrounds which hosted livestock classes during summer months until 1978 when fire destroyed most buildings; teen pregnancy awareness program started in 1984; art & history museum established in 2000; children’s programming center opened in 2006; and reclamation project begun in 2013 which created a new park within historic boundaries adjacent to existing infrastructure
