Forest Grove is a town in Tillamook County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. Forest Grove was founded in 1887 by Luther Bird and his wife Eliza. It became a city on December 5, 1907. On February 14, 1909 it annexed the adjacent towns of Hood River and West Hillsboro. The first post office in Forest Grove was established on October 23, 1887. The name of the town was changed to Forest Grove on December 5, 1907 after it annexed Hood River and West Hillsboro townships into the town. The first mayor of Forest Grove was H.L Slaughter (1907-09). In 1913 the Oregon Legislature passed a bill authorizing the creation of cities in Tillamook and Clackamas Counties with a population over 10,000 people within two years from approval by county commissioners. On July 21, 1914 then Mayor Leland Ewing approved City Charter No XIII which provided for: "That said city be named Forest Grove; that its boundaries be as follows: Beginning at an intersection of avenues A & B Streets eastward thence southwesterly along avenue C Street to an intersection with route 223; thence easterly along route 223 to its original starting point; that all other streets within said limits be named as they are now called." On December 5th 1907 when Forest Grove annexed Hood River and West Hillsboro Townships into it they also made changes to their City Charter providing for "that all other streets within said limits be named as they are now called." In accordance with this amendment all street names were changed so that they began with either "Avenue" or "Street". This continued until 1978 when street renaming reverted back to their original name once again including any intervening avenues/streets unless otherwise noted below! This law also banned shotguns with magazine capacity greater than ten rounds. In 1935, the National Firearms Act was amended which increased the minimum age for buying rifles and shotguns to 21 years old. This amendment allowed more people to own firearms and made it illegal to sell any firearm that could be used in a crime (i.e., any gun that could be used in an accident or homicide). In 1990, the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Bill was introduced into Congress which would have extended background checks on all gun purchases including those made through private sales and allow for the confiscation of criminal-owned handguns if certain conditions were met such as being owned by someone who had been convicted of a felony or having been removed from military service for mental illness. Forest Grove is a town in eastern Oregon, United States. It was founded in 1877 by George Washington Smith and post office named Forest Grove was established in 1878. The first store, the Highland Hotel, opened in 1879. The town's population reached 1,500 people by 1890. In 1906 the name of the town was changed to Portland to honor the city's then-new mayor, Willard MorrisonPortland. A new school was built in Forest Grove and renamed Portland Elementary School after Morrison in 1957; he also donated land for the school and $5,000 worth of furniture were given to it as a gift. In 1916 when World War I started, many residents enlisted and worked on military farms near Bendigo because there were no jobs open in Oregon at that time. After the war ended they returned home and helped build up Forest Grove again until 1949 when they left for good because there weren't any more farm jobs available due to technological advances that had emerged since then like planes and highways which had made life easier for farmers. The history of Forest Grove can be traced back to 1877 when George Washington Smith founded what is now called Forest Grove with his family from Kentucky along with two other men: Jno Cope (the father) who ran a sawmill and Thos Davenport (the brother). There are three stories about how this small community started off: One story says that GWS met Thos Davenport while out walking one day on healthucky property east of Salem where he happened upon some logs that would become part of what would now be known as Forest Grove. Another version has it that GWS walked into a Butcher shop on Whitewater River Road outside present day Grants Pass during lunchtime after buying some hamburgers from their friend John Smeaton who ran the business at that time. As GWS later told historian Rufus Howe: 'I asked him where he got those nice clean slices of viennese ham', thus startingwhat would eventually become known as Forest Grove'. But why Whitewater River Road? Probably because it provided an easily accessible water source for everyone within driving distance!
