Forest Grove has been the town of Forest Grove for over 180 years. The first settlers in the area arrived in 1847 and soon began to develop the land which now makes up Forest Grove. By 1875, there were three stores and a few homes in Forest Grove. In 1892, a group of men from Oregon City decided to move to Forest Grove and start a new life. They named their new town after General James K. Polk, who had helped lead America into World War 1. The settlers brought with them their firearms, ammunition, farming tools and other supplies which helped make Forest Groves an early center of rifle shooting activity. The first annual meeting of the Oregon Rifle Association was held at the home of Mr. Wm Hurlbut on October 4th, 1893. At this meeting it was decided that a rifle range be built on what is now Market Street in Forest Groves so that shooters could have an opportunity to compete against each other. This event became known as “The Bradbury Range Meeting” because George Bradbury, one of the founders of Oregon City, was instrumental in helping organize and manage this First Annual Meeting. Over time, many more ranges were developed throughout the community with members from all walks of life coming together to shoot rifles. On July 6th, 1934 – just over 60 years after its founding – Forest Groves finally achieved cityhood when it became part of Portland! As part of this process we saw many improvements made to our community including: construction of several parks; incorporation as a city; establishment of Streets Department; opening Ofcord store on North Broadway; addition of several restaurants (including Pizzeria Paradiso) during the late 1990s/early 2000s.; development by local developers (such as Home Builders Ventures LLC)of high-end condominium units adjacent to our downtown square.; renewal/replacement/addition by city staff (police & fire)of streetlights located along streets within our boundaries.; current state____________________________________ In 1933 forest grove attained cityhood! On January 1, 1959, the City of Forest Grove annexed the towns of Larchmont and Oregon Hill.
