In 1863 General Robert E Lee decided to cross the Columbia River near present day Portland while supplies were still being trucked upriver from Astoria via wagon road; his intention being to enter into Portland and rejoin forces with Admiral David Dixon Porter's Western Armada offensives against Port Orchard on Vancouver Island instead of proceeding further south to Vancouver Bay where he would have been cut off from reinforcement by British troops under Sir John A Macdonald. On July 15th 1863 Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Major General David Hunter's column near bluffs overlooking Duckworth’s Landing on Hood Canal between Columbia City andPresent dayPortland; several thousand Union soldiers were killed or wounded along with Early’s entire army though only about two-thirds of this number reached Duckworth’s Landing before nightfall due to heavy rains which continued throughout the morning following Early’s attack; most men retreated overland back towards Hood Canal Bridge before dark . The Forest Grove Lumber Company was organized on November 20, 1861 by John McLaughlin and Wm Hartsfield with $5 thousand raised from investors in three days. The company built a sawmill at present day SE 122nd Avenue andNW 62nd Street where it processed lumber for export to Japan and Europe. A hotel/motel named after General George Miller (1815-1881), who served as commander of US forces during the Chinese Opium Wars (1839-1842), opened in Forest Groves on May 6, 1865 beside the current site of Oregon State University - Forrest grove Campus. The general donated land for the school which became Oregon State University - Forrest grove Campus when it merged with OSU to form Oregon State University in 1960. In 1916 an addition to OSU - Forrest grove Campus were two prefabricated buildings known as "Lumineers". These structures were erected without any permanent foundation; they stood like pillars out of ground that had been prepared only for their erection by machines using large blocks of concrete bored through bedrock into very shallow foundations which held water tanks below them while weightless masons worked overnight to build up these supports so that they could be used immediately when completed
