Forest Grove is a small town in Oregon, United States. The population was 7,829 at the 2010 census. ForestGrove is located in Wasco County on the eastern edge of the Columbia Plateau and is surrounded by ranching country to the north, east, and south. The name "Forest Grove" had been current since 1859 when pioneer James Kapp founded what would become known as Kapp Ranch. The post office began operating in 1865 and was renamed Forest Grove in 1892 after David L. Forest, an early settler who bought land near the town square. The first settlers of Forest Grove were those who came from Massachusetts during the Gold Rush era in 1859-1860. They were led by Capt John Cockerill and his brother Peter Cockerill who traveled downriver to found their new settlement on East Orchard road about ten miles (16 km) below present day Forest Grove. James Kapp's ranch became one of many ranches that developed along the Columbia River between 1860-1892; most notably Brown Butte Ranch which became part ofthe Pacific Northwest Railroad system after it was purchased by Union Pacific Railroad in 1892 David L. Forest made an initial investment of $5,000 into construction of a flour mill and store building which he called "Frosty Hollow". He also established a garden with 200 vines for wine production which became one of the most important aspects of his life as a farmer and civic leader in Forest Groove until his death in 1984 In addition to farming – David also built three homes within two years: One on SW Third Street now used as a library; another on SW First Avenue now used as office space for local government; third home still standing on SE Second Avenue today known as "The Farmhouse" - all these homes were designed by architect George Hildebrandt . Shortly after this purchase David began construction on what would become known as "The Farmhouse", designating it number 3 upon its completion some time around 1870 This house served both as a farmstead headquarters during World War I while also providing rental accommodation for soldiers garrisoned at Fort Vancouver during that time period It later served again as multifamily housing until it burned down in 1978 . By 1893 David had constructed additional buildings within what are now downtown forest groove including four stores including one that still stands today - Hardware Store #1 ; Dairy & eggs store #2 ; Post office #3 ; all these buildings remain extant today testifying to David's leadership role within this community Additionally, he erected two impressive tree-lined streets - SW Fourth Street & NW Second Street - soon becoming integral parts of downtown forestgroove identity . Finally, David laid out parkland adjacent to his home across from modern day stadium where he entertained visiting dignitaries , politicians, reporters etc.; this property remains identified today with stately trees lining Sw fourth street
Forest Grove was founded in 1854 by Captain George W. Smith of the United States Navy. The town was named after a grove of trees near the original site of the community. In 1862, Forest Grove was established as a census-designated place (CDP) and remained so until 1990.
