Forest Grove is bordered by the Portland metropolitan area to the north and east, Beaverton to the west, Hillsboro to the south and northeast, and Salem to the southeast. The first European inhabitants of present day Forest Grove were Anglo-American trappers who explored what are now parts of Oregon during 1825–1828 under leader Captain John McLoughlin as part of his explorations for American Fur Company according to oral history researcher Chris Prechtel . In 1829 McLoughlin's men discovered an active volcano on Vancouver Island and named it Mount Hood after then‐President James K. Polk while they were exploring further into what is now Oregon; this naming influenced later decisions about where forestgrove should be located within Lane County. At that meeting, representatives from both Portland and Washington D.C., among others, recommended building a railroad through Forest Grove so that goods could be transported between those cities with less hassle than travelling by boat or train. The first section of the Oregon Railway and Transportation Company's (ORT) Cascade Branch was completed through forest near present day Forest Grove on October 15, 1893. During World War II, forest products like lumber and pulpwood were important contributors to Oregon's economy because they provided an affordable source of fuel for military vehicles and munitions factories throughout the war effort. In 1944, when Eugene McCarthy became Senator from Oregon after losing his bid for President against Franklin D. Roosevelt, he visited Forest Groves mills where he discussed plans for improving highway access to rural communities in Clackamas County while also pledging support for agricultural development in Northwest Oregon which would be related to war production needs such as feedstock for airplane manufacturing plants; these discussions led to legislation establishing US Highway 99W as part of I-5 corridor connecting Salem to Eugene via Interstate 5 .
