Forest Grove is a town in Oregon, United States. The population was 17,811 at the 2010 census. Forest Grove is located in Wasco County. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first humans to live in Forest Grove were Mayan and Pomo Indians who hunted and gathered firewood on the hills around present-day Forest Grove. They built their villages from logs that they fashioned into teepees out of trees. In 1825, when Thaddeus Stevens founded the town of Salem in Hood River County, he purchased land east of Forest Grove from the Mayans for $10 per acre. The townsite was named after Stevens' mentor, Ebenezer Howard (1788-1857). In 1851, George Fenton platted what is now Forest Grove on land he had bought from the heirs of Ebenezer Howard. Development began quickly; by 1860 there were over 100 dwellings in the town – all wood frame or sod houses with large lots for sale or rent near downtown. By 1870, forest products had become so important to Forest Grove that it voted to incorporate as a city! US Route 101 entered town through an intersection with Northwest 1st Avenue and became Main Street; US Route 20 entered via Northwest 3rd Avenue and became Roosevelt Boulevard Eventually both routes were renumbered I-5 along with several other streets during one major rebranding exercise conducted by then–Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler in late 2009/early 2010 as part of his master plan for Portland’s central business district (CBD). At that time many areas within Downtown Portland had similar names including Southwest 2nd Ave., Sutter Street Southeast, First Hill Road Northeast and Willamette Boulevard South but those roads still carried their original freeway numbers when I-5 was rerouted within CBD boundaries. In 1974 Oregon voters approved Proposition 3 which created much needed parkland west of Interstate 5 along Wasconset Bayou adjacent to USFS land west of Multnomah Falls State Park which has been home to various communities since before European contact: Native Americans such as the Chinook people hunted there for food while British fur traders explored its shores for resources during both Spanish and French occupation times; later settlers cleared away most of these forests creating an open country now known as ‘The Hills’ east side extending back about 12 miles (19 km) towards Multnomah Falls while ‘The Streets’ extend southward down Wasconset Bayou

One of these settlers, John Denton, named his land for his brother-in-law and business partner, Samuel Ogden. The early Forest Groveans worked their farms and raised livestock until logging began operations on nearby hills in the late 1800s. Timber companies came to market their product here by ship from British Columbia and other parts of Canada; they set up sawmills and exported logs to Europe as well as North America. During World War II, Forest Grove became one of several communities withinPortland that served as military bases supplying troops with food, fuel, ammunition and other supplies. In 1942–43 a steel mill was built here and employed more than 1,000 workers; it closed in 1967 after a fire caused by an overloading transformer destroyed much of the mill's equipment. In 1948 Forest Grove voters passed a resolution designating themselves "the city" or "town" of Forest Grove instead of just "Fruitdale". The name stuck and has been used ever since - even when residents changed municipalities (e.g., from Salem to Hillsboro) or when neighborhoods were split off (e.g., Donnybrook). * According to the 2010 US Census there are 9,811 people living in Forest Grove!
