Forest Grove is a town in Oregon, United States. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. The name Forest Grove comes from the grove of trees near the town's center. The history of Forest Grove can be traced back to 1847 when Captain James A. Henschel and his party discovered land that would become Forest Grove after they traveled through what is now Washington County on their way to found Clackamas County. The first permanent residents were three families who arrived in October 1847: Mr. & Mrs. Jenson, Mr. & Mrs. O'Malley and their three children John, Katherine and Emily (Emily becameMrs._Herschel). For many years, Forest Grove was a small frontier community with only a few shops and services available for its citizens. However, with the arrival of the railroads in 1870, things changed for the better as forest products began to be shipped south to Portland and Seattle by train. In 1875, Forest Grove had its first school; however it did not exist long because it was replaced by a larger school building which still stands today on SW Third Street NE in town Center. In 1907 there were two bombings within minutes of each other at nearby Dayton’s grocery store which killed four people and injured thirty-eight others; this made national news at the time due to its shocking nature as well as Oregon’s reputation for being unsafe for retailers during that time period*. Forest Grove is a town in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 5,953 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The name Forest Grove comes from the forest near the town site that once covered 6,000 acres. In 1853, George Washington Hargrave founded a small post office in Forest Grove and named it after his home state of Virginia. In 1858, Hargrave donated land to the town for a new courthouse and school district were to be built on it. However, due to flooding during the late 1800s, only two buildings were completed in Forest Grove - the first courthouse and first school building in Oregon - before being removed and replaced by larger structures elsewhere in Multnomah County. In 1888, Forrest Jarrell purchased 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of land south of Forest Grove from John Day for $1 per acre (0.40 ha). Jarrell developed this land into what is now known as Forrest Park which served as an agricultural research center for many years until its closure in 1978 due to budget cuts at Oregon State University. The townsite at present-day Forest Grove was settled by farmers who arrived around 1855 when gold was discovered near what is now Interstate 5 within sight of present-day Forest Grove town limits. By 1860 most of these settlers had departed for other parts of Oregon or California because they could not afford to purchase property farther away from goldfields sites such as Butte or Siskiyou Valley; however about 30 families remained behind and gradually began raising crops and forming businesses such as storekeepers, blacksmiths, livery drivers etc., which continues to this day with several hundred residents living primarily within walking distance of downtown offers all types shopping opportunities including high-end stores like Nordstrom's Department Store Chain while also having access to public transportation options including MAX bus lines running through downtown getting people there quickly & easily ForrestGrove today has more than 1100 residents!
