Forest Grove is a city in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 24,972 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. Forest Grove is named after President George Washington's forested hilltop estate in Fairfax County, Virginia (now NorthernVirginia). The first Europeans to visit what is now Forest Grove were French missionaries in 1792 and they called it "Village des Saints-Innocents" because of its religious significance. In 1814 an American Fur Company trading post and mission station was established on the banks of the Willamette River near present day Forest Grove. The post served as a center for fur trade and stocked food for traders travelling between Russia and China. In 1825 Fort Vancouver was founded by Captain John McLoughlin as part of Treaty 7 which ended the California gold rush. The fort marked the confluence of three rivers; north of this point lay Russian river valley and east lay Oregon River valley. In 1846 Brigham Young issued a proclamation calling for Mormons to move westward into what are now Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada and Arizona under the leadership of Heber Cibber who had accompanied Young on his journey from Nauvoo Illinois to Salt Lake City Utah via Arkansas Pass. On January 24, 1850 Brigham Young organized a group including 20 men led by Orson Hyde to purchase land located near present day Forest Grove from Michael O’Malley for $10 per acre ($ million today). This donation formed much of what would become Forest Grove Parkland later renamed George Wills Park after Orson Hyde's father-in-law Oregon Statehood Produces many Commercial Developments On July 4th 1859 when Oregon became a state there were more than 450 businesses registered withthe Commerce Department alone in Salem & Eugene! The area now known as Forest Grove was first settled by European Americans in 1847 when they came to what is now the City ofPortland from Vancouver, British Columbia. In 1870, the town of Forest Grove was founded on land bought from the Salish people by John Wesley Powell and his sons James and George Washington Powell. The name "Forest Grove" originated with a logging camp established there in 1876 by David Aspinwall and his brother Hiram Aspinwall. The final word for grove or forested area had not yet been coined when this group of men started to clear land for timber concessionnaires. By 1878, all but two miles (three quarters of a mile) of the original forest were logged and within 5 years communities had sprung up around both Portland and Vancouver because of cheap lumber prices brought about by increased demand for railroads throughout North America. In 1890, Oregon Governor Oswald West set out to find a new site for Oregon’s capital city afterPortland became too populous and expensive to build on its isolated waterfront neighborhoods near Willamette River. He directed Secretary of State Edwin Bates to explore possible sites within the Great Northwest Territory including what is now Forest Grove along with Albany, Oregon; Salem, Oregon; Eugene,Oregon; Grants Pass Junction (now Gladstone); and Astoria Peninsula (now Olympia). After much discussion among top officials including Mayor John Prentice Howe of Portland and Assistant Secretary Edwin Bates made their selections on October 9th 1890 at an Executive Mansion ballroom in downtown Portland under more than 100 witnesses including Presidents Harrison Gray Otis III & Franklin D Roosevelt. On November 7th 1890 US Grant issued General Order No 10 which designated Forrest Gump Boulevard as Utah Avenue in honor of Mr President's purchase from Mr Howe! Forrest Gump Boulevard designation lasted until 1959 when Interstate 80 replaced it
