Forest Grove is a town in Deschutes County, Oregon, United States. The population was 4,898 at the 2010 census. Forest Groves history can be traced back to 1877 when a group of men and women organized as the Forest Grove Agricultural Society to purchase property east of the then-new town of Salem. In 1880, they founded what is now known as the Forest Grove Creamery Company. From its beginnings until 1949, Forest Grove was a part of Portland. On July 3, 1949, it became a separate municipality with its own government and police department. The current growth in Forest Grove has come about through two things: annexation by Portland in 1990 and development around Interstate 5 south of town which has made much needed land available for development including an arena for the Portland Timbers soccer team and a new high school that opened in 2006. In 1907, when Portland began developing downtown along Burnside Street between First Avenue and Elliott Street on the edge of what is now Pioneer Square Park (the site where today's City Hall sits), forest grove residents started to leave their homes for work near downtown. Many came from rural areas surrounding Bend because there were no other jobs available close by or because they could not find enough desirable land nearby to sell their holdings so they could move intoPortland permanently. The first building in downtown was erected on Northwest Fifth Avenue just north of Burnside Street – this building served as both the city hall Annexation Meeting House from 1907-1910 (and still stands) and also as Portland's first courthouse from 1911-1913 before it moved out to Union Square across Fourth Avenue from City Hall Annexation Meeting House. In 1910, after years of discussion among local officials over whether or not to annex forest grove intoPortland due to insufficient land availability outside our small community within city limits - finally voted on by citizens via an election - annexation happened! It marked the beginning of what would become one OF THE LARGEST CITIES IN THE UNITED STATES WHEN IT TOOK EFFECT ON JULY 3rd OF THAT YEAR: FOREST GROVE CHANGED FROM A MINOR COMMUNITY IN DESCHUTES COUNTY TO ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR AND DEMOCRATIC CITIES ON EARTH ASPortland BECAME ITS OWN CITY WITH ITS OWN GOVERNMENT AND POLICE Department!
