In 1916 William Halsey Lamar became Governor of Oregon after serving as United States Ambassador to Japan from 1915-1916 and then as Secretary of War from 1916-1920 during World War I; he also served two terms (1922-1945) as Mayor of Portland before becoming a judge on the Oregon Supreme Court in 1945. During World War II he donated land for Pearl Harbor Naval Air Station which would become one of America's largest naval airfields ever built before it was closed in 1975 by President Gerald Ford because ofbudget cuts caused by thenPresident Ronald Reagan's administration; Forest Grove would not become an AFB until 1982 when it became Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson AFB . Forest Grove was founded in 1853 as a small log cabin community on the Columbia River by lumbermen and their families. The name "Forest Grove" originated from its location along the forested ridges that separate the Monadnock Mountains from the Willamette Valley. The first settlers were men of Swedish descent who had come overland to Oregon in 1849. They named their new settlement after Groveland, a small village on the west coast of Sweden. In 1862, forestalling any further growth around Groveland, they elected to name their town Forest Grove after themselves. In 1876, when they became part of Multnomah County, they decided to change their name back to Groveland and keep Forest Grove as their town site name. In recent years there have been several renovations and upgrades made to both the public library and the fire hall in Forest Grove – all done with help from private donations or funds raised through events like Fourth of July fireworks contests or car wash days! One such event which drew attention this year was an annual Pumpkin Festival held on Saturday at McClellan Park which featured local pumpkin crafters selling their products throughout the day while also enjoying live music and food trucks from 3pm-10pm
