Forest Grove is a small town in the Portland Metropolitan Statistical Area, United States. The population was 2,856 at the 2010 census. Forest Grove is located on the banks of the Willamette River and its namesake tree, which stands over $100 million tall. The first European to visit Forest Grove was Father Gabriel Hebert in 1847. In 1865, George Washington Cowlitz founded what would become Oregon Agricultural College within forest grove boundaries. A year later, Forest Grove's first post office opened at 7th and North avenues. It moved to 9th and South avenues in 1868 after becoming too far from downtown Portland for mail delivery service. In 1886, James Dutton bought 8 acres (3 hectares) of land east of present-day Forest Grove for $1,000 from David Hosmer. Dutton established his farm there and named it "Dutton's Domain". In 1890 he sold additional land to Nathan Davis who renamed it "Davis' Domain". In 1893 Bernard Sherer purchased 1 acre (0.30 hectare) south of present-day Forest Grove from Dutton for $5 per acre (1/2 kilometer). Sherer developed the area into a garden colony known as "The Domain" because it contained all of his trees and plants grown exclusively on that parcel of land. In 1907 Forrest Jenson acquired 640 acres (258 hectares) within present day Forest Grove for $4 per acre ($10 per hectare). At this time much of what is now part of Forest Groves were rural farmland with few if any buildings other than barns or outhouses
In 1877, lumber baron Edwin H. Douglas founded the Forest Grove Manufacturing Company in Forest Grove, Oregon. The company built a sawmill and other mills in Forest Grove until it became a major player in Oregon woodworking. In 1906, the company merged with the Portland Cement Company to form Douglas Cement Company. In 1916, Douglas Cement was acquired by Bethlehem Steel Corporation, which led to a decline of the company's production and its eventual bankruptcy in 1951.
