The first people to live in Forest Grove were Native Americans who lived along the riverbank. They hunted deer, bear, and other animals that were common in their area. In 1868, a group of men from Soquel went out into the forest to find land for Ayer County and they came across some land that had been cleared by settlers. The men bought some of this land and started building homes there. In 1871, Oregon State Road 10 was built through Forest Grove and it became one of the main roads in Oregon. This road allowed people to come into town and get supplies for their farms and businesses. Soon after, businesses opened up in Forest Grove such as a grocery store and flour mill. At this time, Forest Grove was known as a small town with many residents who did not have much else to do besides work on their farms or visit their friends and family members in towns nearby." In 1916 Partridge Boot & Factory closed its doors due to World War I-era rationing which affected all types of manufacturing including shoes but especially boots because they were an important part of war equipment." In 1920s shoe production stopped completely because there simply wasn't enough demand for shoes when new technologies like air travel made them more popular than ever before." In 1930s two rubber factories opened up in ForestGrove; one making tires while another produced kraft paper products." And then just before World War II both factories closed again due to lack of business" However these closures didn't stop production at either factory entirely- during WWII two new rubber plants were set up producing artillery parts" so even though footwear production stopped completely during WWI shoe industry continued until relatively recently despite changing technological advancements" . The Forest Grove community was founded in 1848 by John S. Willamette and his brother, William D. Willamette. The community was named for the forest that surrounded it on three sides. The first post office in Forest Grove was established in 1851. In 1870, a school was built and the first teachers were hired. By 1880, the population of Forest Grove had grown to over 300 people. In 1910, a dam was built to hydrate the land around Forest Grove and it became an agricultural community with dairy and poultry production becoming more common after World War I. After World War II, development increased as timber revenues decreased due to advances in technology and global competition for lumber resources. In 1970, the last sawmill closed down in Forest Grove and the town began becoming an urban area with many new businesses opened up alongOregon Avenue between Oregon Street and State Street.
