In 1886, Alfred Shingletown opened a store at Main Street and North Avenue in what is now downtown Forest Grove. At first it was just a general store with some goods available for sale but soon became an important center for local commerce due to its location close by water supplies and its easy accessibility by wagon or horseback from nearby townships. In 1907, Forrest Fenton laid out a street grid system which still functions today within downtown Forest Grove proper and several other areas around town periphery including Depot Square Park & Main Street SE (the old post office building), NW corner lot between S 3rd Ave & NE 2nd Ave., SW corner lot between NE 2nd Ave & S 4th Ave., SE corner lot between S 1st Ave & NE 3rd Ave., NW corner lot between NE 3rd Ave & NNW corner block NW of depot square park

The town grew rapidly during the early 19th century due to its location at the mouth of Willamette River, which made it an ideal spot for shipbuilding and other commercial activities. In 1851, Forest Grove became a city under charter from Portland; however, it declined in popularity after World War I because of its distance from major metropolitan areas and lack of industry. The population peaked at around 30,000 in 1950 but has since declined to about 15,000 today. Forest Grove is home to several important historical landmarks including Fawcett Park (named for George Fawcett), which contains a museum focused on his life and work as a farmer and city planner; American Cemetery (now also known as Mount Pleasant Cemetery); and Freeman House (also known as Freeman-House Block). Additionally, many local businesses are named after individuals or events associated with Forest Grove history – such as Fawcett's Tavern (now used as a pizzeria), Freeman's Department Store (now closed down), and Schoolhouse Lane Bakery & Cafe (currently closed).
The Forest Grove area was first settled by people in the early 1800s. The first head of the Forest Grove Indian Tribe was named Chief Joseph. In 1853, a group of settlers from British Columbia came to what is now Forest Grove and founded the town. The town was originally called Victoria because it was located on the banks of the Willamette River. The name changed to Forest Grove in 1876 after a group of local farmers donated land for the town. The community grew rapidly during its early years and soon had a population of around 100 people. In 1902, Forest Grove became an incorporated municipality and began to develop its own infrastructure, such as schools and fire stations. In 1916, forest trees were cut down to make way for a car dealership which eventually closed down. However, the community's spirit never died and over time it regained some of its former strength and growth. Today, Forest Grove is one of Oregon's most vibrant communities with a rich history that continues to be celebrated today!
