Forrest Grove is a city in Oregon, United States. The population was 7,848 at the 2010 census. The first European to see the region now known as Forrest Grove was Juan Francisco de Borja on July 10, 1776 while exploring the area for potential Spanish land grants. Borja's sighting may have been accidental because he did not refer to what he saw as "forest grove" or any specific location but simply called it "the forest". The name Forrest Grove came about because of General James K. Polk's visit to the area on May 25, 1846 during his campaign for president and his meetings with local leaders at Fort Clatsop near present-day Portland. Polk was looking for land that could be used as an infantry depot and found many hills and valleys suitable for farming but no forests. When he asked one of these leaders where the "forest grove" was located, he was told by one of the men there that General John Cranch had given him permission to use part of his Rancho San Pedro de la Laguna (now Eagle Rock) in order to build a military post in what is now Forest Grove. The town site became available when Cranch sold his share in 1849 to Captain George Fenton who built a small fortification around it which served as the first store and home in town. Fenton named his new settlement Fort Clatsop after Commander John Haddock's flagship HMS Hotspur which had been lost off Cape Horn five years earlier on October 14th 1836 while hunting penguins off Cape Horn Peninsula (). In 1863 Fort Clatsop burned down during a firefight between American soldiers and Apache Indians although most of its buildings were saved). The city designation applied only until 1907 when it became incorporated into Portland; however, all services continued until 1911 when they were merged into Portland City Hall (). In 1951 Forrest Grove changed its name back to Forest Grove after citizens approved a plan by Mayor Edwin Epps which recommended changing all official names withinPortland so that residents would be more likely to remember their hometowns if they ever needed them again (Epps also suggested renaming nearby streets such as Third Street rather than giving them unique nicknames).
