In Forest Grove, Oregon, the history of guns and gun barrels goes back to 1868. At that time, Forest Grove was a small town located in Whatcom County. A gunsmith named John Holbrook established his business in 1868 and began manufacturing firearms. He developed a process for making barrel-rifles by welding metal plates together to create a tube. This method allowed him to make rifle barrels that were much thicker than those produced before. In 1870, he married Mary Elizabeth McDermott and the couple moved their business to what is now the city of Portland. The Holbrooks continued making rifles until 1892 when they retired from their business.
Forest Grove is an unincorporated community in Douglas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. The Forest Grove post office was established in 1892 and discontinued in 1919. A railroad station was also located here until 1966. Forest Grove is located on the Union Pacific Railroad between Ashland andPortland. The first settler in Forest Grove was Lewis Hinkson, who arrived here in 1854. He built a cabin near what is now the intersection of State Street and Elm Street. Other early settlers included John Pritchard (1857), Solomon Burch (1860), Edwin Howells (1862-64), James Fenton (1865-68), Wm Maynard Smith (1870-72; died 1865) and George Stephenson Gardner (1875). A school was started here in 1903 by Rev J C Berryman with twelve students. In 1907, an addition to the school building became home to the library which remained there until 1964 when it moved to its present location on East Washington Avenue. In 1916, two additions were made to the library – one for $1,000 and another for $5,000 which raised the total cost to $10,000. That same year saw the first of many organ concerts held at Forest Grove High School when Mrs Ethel Sayers donated her organs for use as part of a medical experiment run by Dr Charles Drew University Medical Center at Harvard University.. In 1921 local resident Dora Latham raised money from her grocery store customers to purchase a new school bus that would serve all of Douglas County free of charge. This bus served as their public transportation system until 1975 when they replaced it with buses operated by Douglas County Transportation Authority . After World War II both schools closed but reopened briefly in 1951 before permanently closing again in 1957 due to budget cuts caused by suburbanization within Douglas County . In 1974–1975 Community Schools District No 5 opened up shop with its own elementary/middle/high school buildings adjacent to Forest Groves High School which has continue providing education services ever since! In 1978 a new firetower/watchtower was erected on top of an old pesticide storage barn east side of town just off USFS property adjoining Hicks Road north of SR503 about 1 mile west from junction with SR503 &SR1010 extending into Butte National Monument (& adjacent private land). It's been reported that this tower has been used intermittently over recent years primarily for sun gazing exercises designed to improve visibility during twilight hours from nearby homes…. By 2000 only 8% or so still standing mainmast & masts significant above water] showed any visible remains]. A Friends group began restoring this structure along with associated infrastructure including: belay lines & outriggers; swim platform; lifejackets supplied; restrooms; cooking area using microwave ovens….. [the tower had been] completely destroyed or significantly deteriorated by 2006]. 09/2013 photo showing much deterioration since then….
