Forest Grove is a small town in Willamette County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. Forest Grove is home to Northwest Christian University and the Oregon State Fairgrounds. The area that now becomes Forest Grove was first settled by the Klamath people in 1811. The first European settlers were the Russians in 1847. Oregon Agricultural College (now Portland State University) opened its doors in 1870, followed by Oregon Wesleyan Seminary (later Pacific Lutheran University) in 1875. Portland Railway Company donated land east of downtown to create a planned community called "Portlandia". In 1886, Forrest Griggs became president of Oregon Agricultural College and lobbied for it to be moved from Salem to Forest Grove due to Griggs' belief that agricultural training would lead to technological advances that would benefit society as a whole. When Eugene Debs ran for US President on an anti-corporate platform in 1888, he campaigned through Forest Grove; Debs won but lost points with voters because he did not mention agriculture specifically. In 1916, when World War I started, many men from throughout America came westward to fight; many of these soldiers took jobs as Morgan employees on ranches run by their families back East; some of these families kept up ranching after their husbands returned home while others transitioned into farming or manufacturing careers. After World War I ended there were few opportunities for those new residents who had come westward during the war because much of the country had been turned over togrowers: wheat production topped out at about 10 million bushels per acre during 1920-1925 while oil production peaked at just under $2 billion dollars during 1925-1930*. This situation changed with Interstate 5 being built through central Oregon and various industries coming onto the scene: logging became dominant while agriculture shrunk* (*See also "Opinion: It's time we recognized our state's agricultural history" article). A number of businesses closed down after deregulation started happening around 1985: organized crime figured prominently among them*.
