Forest Grove became an incorporated town in 1903. The name "Forest Grove" is based on a grove of trees near where it was founded. The first people to live in Forest Grove were wagoners and traders from east Ohio who came through the region during the early 1800s. They named their new settlement "Forest Grove" because of its close proximity to a wooded area called "the forest." The first house built in ForestGrove was built by Capten John Smith and his family in 1868, just before Oregon became an independent state. By 1870, many other families had moved into the community and it had become one of the largest settlements in Clatsop County. In 1903, ForestGrove became an incorporated municipality with a population of 1,701 residents. That same year saw another milestone as ForestGrove's first paved road was completed; this road served as a connector between downtown Portland and rural areas north of town. As time went on, other transportation options such as railroads and automobiles came into play and made traveling to or from outside of town much easier than it had ever been before - making ForestGrove one of the most popular communities in Clatsop County for both locals and visitors alike! Today's culture at Forest Groove reflects its history - with more emphasis on arts & crafts businesses as well as eateries that offer fresh local seafood dishes!
