In Forest Grove, Oregon, ammunition has been a part of the community since before there were towns. The first ammunition store in Forest Grove was opened in 1872 by local merchants. In 1897, the city of Portland built its own arsenal and Ammunition Depot. At that time, Forest Grove had one of the most modern arsenals in the area. The store continued to serve as a key source for ammunition until 1957 when it closed its doors permanently. The Arsenal continued to be used until 1979 when it was replaced by the Oregon State Armory which is now home to the Oregon Army National Guard's Multinational Division Headquarters. The history of Forest Grove's arsenal can be traced back to 1872 when local merchants pooled their resources together and opened a store to sell firearms and other munitions products. This early armory functioned as a main source for ammunition throughout Oregon and beyond due to its convenient location and wide variety of products available. In 1907, Portland began developing plans for an expanded city government including an armory on Magazine Street within limits set by City Councilmember John Troupes Sr. In response, Mayor Harry Chandler announced his intent to build an armory within city limits if he were re-elected in October 1907 ballot box results showed that he would win reelection with more than 50% of the vote against challenger James Worthy (the son of then-mayor Chandler). However, despite being elected with more than 50% of the vote against Worthy, Mayor Chandler did not actually build an armory as planned; instead he leased space at what is now Donahue’s Department Store on SW 3rd Avenue from JT&W Harriman & Sons Ammunition Merchants Inc., builder of what are today known as “Portland” arms stores across town at NW 9th Ave.,SW 12th Ave.,SE 3rd Ave.,NW 11th Ave.,and NE 8th St.. These stores were open from 1907 until 1958 when they closed because they could not compete with Armoury located just outside downtown Portland on Navy Yard Boulevard managed by Lewis Redding company who also owned adjacent land east of Third Avenue between First and Second Streets (now occupied by Morrison High School). However, even though Portland never built an authentic Armamentry due to lack of funds or political pressure from above likeArmoury did outside DowntownPortland(which still functions today), many feel that this event effectively initiated Ammo industry growth northward into Multnomah County - good news for those residing northeast (as well)of Greater Portland! It should also be noted that although Armory closed down permanently in 1957 No less than 7 other "armories" popped up throughout NorthwestOregon during this period: 5 near Eugene; 2 near Springfield; 1 at Hillsboro; 1 near Hood River; 1 at Aiken ; all but one ceased operations within 10 years! So while Armory may have only existed temporarily–in reality this very act initiated ammo industry growth northwestward into Greater Portland!

Forest Grove is located on both banks of the Deschutes River which forms its eastern border; this river forms much of the town's identity as well as its main source or water supply (the Deschutes Brewery produces local craft beers). The community began as a small agricultural village on the banks of the Willamette River. By 1907, it had grown to include an Masonic lodge and several stores and homes. In 1912, forest groves were being planted along the riverbank to support lumber mills that would be built in nearby Salem. The area became known as "The Forests" because of their large trees and numerous streams that flowed through them. The city grew rapidly during World War II as Portland's largest military center due to its location near Rangoon airfield on Beaver Creek Road (now Airport Boulevard). Many factories were erected here including Nike Inc., Lockheed Martin Corporation, and Boeing Airplane Company plants; all with jobs for Portland residents who supplied materials or worked on production sites. In 1947, when Multnomah County was created from portions of two other counties, Forest Grove became one of its first jurisdictions . The city has since continued to grow rapidly with annexations from other localities: PCCNOA in 1988; SEIU Local 521 in 1997; MAX Light Rail District 2 in 2006; Troutdale Community College annexation in 2009; Southcoast Foods Incorporated annexation in 2013). Today ForestGrove has over 34000 residents within its borders making it one of the most populous cities within a radius of 20 miles (30 km) covering more than 46% of Multnomah County's population density!
Forest Grove was founded in 1857 by Capt. George Washington Smith and his wife, Nancy. The first post office was established at Forest Grove on November 14, 1857. A store and the first school were built there in the early years of the community. In 1865, a sawmill and grist mill were erected at Forest Grove. In 1876, a frame church was built at Forest Grove by Rev. Fenton Waddell. The town became an incorporated municipality in 1912. In 1950, a large shopping mall was built at the site of what is now Walmart.
