In 1865, Japanese American World War II internment began at Camp Hansen within the then rural eastern edge of Clackamas County and began within days of President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation being issued on January 1st that year which ended slavery throughout most of America including Oregon and gave rise to suspicions among some whites about Japanese Americans living amongst us freely without any legal persecution or exclusionary measures like military detention or forced labor camps such as Manus Island/Nauru). Forests Grove was founded in 1847 by two brothers, John and George Forest. The family ran a sawmill and grist mill in the area until 1861 when they sold their land to the United States government for use as a military reservation. The Forest Grove school was established in 1870. In 1881, the Forest Grove post office was moved from its original location to an abandoned Adobe on the property. The post office was renamed Forest Grove in 1904 after Congressman Edmund S. Fitzgerald of Oregon who helped pass the bill creating the reservation. In 1912, forest grove became part of Multnomah County and remained so until 1959 when it became part of Salem City.
