The first public display of a telescope was held at an agricultural fairgrounds near Eugene on September 6th, 1893 by Professor James Fenton Hughes with an 8-inch reflector he had built himself from scrap materials. In 1896, Professor John Herschel included a 4-meter reflecting telescope in his exhibit at the London Exhibition and this led to significant advances in telescopy during that decade including designs for parabolic reflectors andEyepieces which could be attached directly onto telescopes! In 1912, Orville H. Bean donated his estate to foundation which used it for research into new telescope technology as well as storage facilities until 1946 when it moved to its current location on Wright Park Boulevard where it continues today as one of the leading museums devoted to science and optics education!
