Wickersham named his new community Riverside because he thought it looked like a Roman Colosseum from his home on Telegraph Hill across from Fort McDowell (now Mount Vernon). In 1870, Wickersham recruited Finnish immigrant Johan Naukkarinen to help him build a sawmill on Josephine Creek which processed lumber brought overland by wagon trains heading towards Seattle through Whatcom County. By 1872, Naukkarinen had built a larger mill on Redwood Creek downstream from Wickersham's mill; this became known as Naukka Sawmill #1 later that year. In 1875, Wickersham sold his share in Naukka Sawmill #1 to George Netke for $812 dollars plus 10% interest each year until it accrues $40 per acre ($4,560 total). Netke renamed his new community Gresford after Gresford Township in England where he had been born some years earlier. In 1880, Jens Jensen bought property adjacent to Gresford along Beaver Dam Road from George Netke for $4,480 cash plus 10% interest each year until it accrues $160 per acre ($8192 total). Jensen developed this land into what is now Southeast Portland’s Burnside Marketplace district which began developing around this time including homesites along Beaver Dam Road near NE 92nd Avenue andNE 137th Street east of Burnside Boulevard – today’s Foster Park neighborhood northeast of Interstate 590 (). Jensen also purchased 6 acres north of Gresford along Beaver Dam Road from Peter Kapp for $3200 cash plus 10% interest each year until it accrues $6400 total; this became known as NortheastPortland’s Most Produce District (). A irrigation canal was constructed nearby soon after by entrepreneur Elijah Woodworth who ran an armory business next door to Jens Jensen’s Armory textile factory at SE Division Street and Burnside Boulevard (now NW 23rd Avenue) . It remains one of only two Chicago-area sewer systems still serving entire neighborhoods within their original construction area . During these years Jens Jensen also served as mayor pro tempore (a position equivalent to city councilor) three times cumulatively totaling 16 months between 1886-1892 inclusive . When elected mayor Pro Tempore he used his influence behind the scenes to get various social welfare programs enacted into law such as public housing developments throughout rapidly growing streetcar suburbs such as Hawthorne Heights (), Logan Square (), Edmonds (), etc.; while simultaneously working successfully behind the scenes with City Councilors John Potter ()[citation needed]to obtain important funding requests necessary for large streetcars like Columbia River Bridge replacement projects .)After being elected Mayor Pro Tempore he entered officeJanuary 1st 1893 thru November 30th 1893 term beginning January 1st 1895 thru December 2nd 1895 - becoming first person ever elected mayor pro tempore directly from office
