Eugene, Oregon is a city of over 100,000 people that has been known for its firearms and rifle enthusiasts since the 1800s. The city was founded by fur traders in 1825 and quickly became one of the leading trading centers in the Northwest. In 1853, Eugene was renamed after General George Custer during the American Civil War. This group became known as "The Riflemen." They met to shoot pistols and rifles from sunrise to sunset. In 1911, six-time Olympic gold medalist Russian shooter Vasily Matsukhin moved to Eugene and began practicing law under attorney John Pullen. These rifles were so successful that he decided to start manufacturing his own guns rather than selling products through licensed gun dealerships. Eugene was founded by Captain John McLoughlin on December 26, 1851 as Fort Myer on land granted to him by President George Washington. On April 14, 1853, McCloughlin designated what is now downtown Eugene as the new capital of Oregon Territory after he became governor thereof following approval from United States Congress. In 1855, when Territorial Legislature moved to Salem due to disagreements about who should be governor, McCloughlin again designated Eugene as capital because he felt it would be more auspicious than Salem which had been founded by two British subjects only a few years earlier. From 1865 until his death in 1865 there were several mayors before James Wickersham became mayor in 1889; Wickersham oversaw construction of much Portland infrastructure including Central Avenue and First Street NE during this time period which helped make Portland an important metropolis within Northwest America during this period In 1916 Douglas MacArthur served as Mayor while World War I raged around them; however Douglas MacArthur withdrew soon afterwards citing health reasons Mayor Harry Heineman presided over significant public works projects such as reconstruction yards near Government House/HQ on SW 3rd Ave during this time frame; these yards later became known collectively as Heineman-Langford Road Heineman also spearheaded passage of statehood legislation for Oregon on November 4th 1912 becoming first person ever to do so without taking office On October 6th 1969 then Mayor Bruce Hampton resigned amidst controversy surrounding his wife's relationship with then State Treasurer Don Isenstadt; Hampton was succeeded by Dan Evans who served until May 7th 1996 when he resigned too due to concerns about federal funding for local programs

Eugene was founded by John Atlee Bryan in 1874 as a town on what is now the east side of Eugene Street. It grew rapidly after incorporation as a city in 1909 and became one of America's most populous cities by 1945. Eugene experienced significant growth during World War II, when its industry contributed $21 million to local coffers. In recent decades, however, Eugene has suffered from several economic downturns both domestically and abroad; however, it remains one of the most vibrant American cities. Eugene’s history spans over 120 years and includes many noteworthy moments such as: • On July 4th 1870, John Atlee Bryan proclaimed Eugene “the free soil capital of America” with his proclamation that land grants would be available for settlement on this new site. This marks one of Eugene’s earliest successes – starting with just five acres (2 km²) grant to twenty families on May 1st 1871! Bryan also helped found two other early towns adjacent to present day Eugene – Willamette Falls on riverbank northwest of downtown and Springfield on about where Main Street presently intersects University Avenue (now more properly called Washington Boulevard). These towns were all established less than three years after their respective founder’s declarations! In 1873/4 alone, 2154 settlers arrived in or near modern day Eugene – an unprecedented rate at that time! A total population exceeding 5000 people populated Brookings Valley around Ecola Creek by 1875 which may have been due to railroads reaching this area then being developed by entrepreneurs looking for new farmland westward into Oregon Territory! During this time there was discussion among some leaders within our community about moving away from downtown & establishing ourselves eastward along Beaver River between Pioneer Square & Scholls Ferry Landing (& probably adjoining parts now known as Albany & Hillsboro). Some felt downtown could continue to serve well as a business district while others felt annexing these newer settlements would provide even more space for businesses within our nucleus should we choose to move away from downtown permanently 😉 So much happened during those early days no matter how you slice it! 😃 . . . . #eugenewestside
