The Eugene Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1881, and has been a part of the community ever since. The club has enjoyed many successes over the years, including winning the first Oregon Open range championship in 1903, and being recognized as one of the top rifle clubs in the United States by NRA magazine in 1954. Today, Eugene Rifle and Pistol Club members continue to enjoy engage in their favorite hobby - shooting rifles and pistols at local ranges across Oregon. Eugene, Oregon is a small town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. It is located about an hour and a half south of Portland and about an hour north of Salem. As of the 2010 census, the population was 27,821. The Eugene–Springfield Combined Statistical Area has a population of 509,946. The first Europeans to visit what is now Eugene were fur traders sailing up the Willamette River in 1792. They named the land "Oregon" after King George II of England who had owned some lands in that area. In 1818, when Congress passed via Executive Order #14 from President James K. Polk a bill creating Ft. Laramie as part of Ulysses S Grant's Sioux Indian reservation west of the Platte River, Eugene became part of that reservation. In 1853, developer John Caryl built what is now Pioneer Hall on land near downtown Eugene for use as an agricultural fairgrounds and teacher training school called "Oregon State Normal School." When it opened its doors on February 12th, 1854, it was one of the first public schools in Oregon. In 1863 Captain David Beall founded what are now Beall's seed stores at 5th and Elliott Streets while serving as Superintendent of Public Instruction for Lane County (now Multnomah County). He also developed what are now Beall Center and State Street areas around his store which remain important commercial corridors today. In 1862 Union General Alfred Pleasonton arrived at Fort Donelson with supplies for General Joseph Johnston's army advancing against Confederate General Robert Ewell during the Civil War; he found this area unoccupied by troops because most people had evacuated to other parts before his arrival Pleasonton decided to stay put and siege Fort Donelson until Johnston could be reinforced; he established himself at Whatcom Army Depot northeast of town where he stored his munitions Portland resident Edwin Drake participated in Pleasonton's defense when Nashville went up in flames following Confederate cavalry raids into northwestern Tennessee on July 4th 1861; he lost many family members including his father-in-law Jesse Lickliter who later served as mayorof Portland Lickliter donated money to build two miles (3 km) wide strip alongCenter Street between Willamette Boulevard and First Avenue SW between 1861-1865 which became known as Lickliter Way after him ; this stretch remains one block long today ?
