In 1847, James Kenedy built a sawmill just east of downtown on Donner Creek which became an important early economic development for Eugene. In 1862, Lane Seminary (now called Lane Community College) was founded here with instruction in theology; it remains one of Eugene's most significant institutions today. In 1863, Battle Ground Park was created as a public park southeast of downtown after local farmers banded together to purchase land for this purpose from coal mine owners who refused to sell it to anyone else because they wanted their mining rights preserved! Aerial photography taken by United States Navy Squadron VX-1 during WWII reveals many highlights associated with historic Downtown Eugene including: The old jail located across Sutter Street from current First Baptist Church; various warehouses used by local paper manufacturers such as Ellington & Sons Paper Co.; several prewar homes built by prominent citizens including Judge Waddell Reid; two World War II fighter/bomber hangars located close together along SE Seventh Avenue NE; Memorial Drive SW which ran parallel streetcar tracks adjacent to then Governor Neil Goldwater’s home until their replacement with Interstate 5 about 1960; newly constructed Pioneer Courthouse completed in 1951 followed shortly thereafter by additionalhistoric buildings erected within brief period around that time including Home Depot store etc.;many recent additions like Interstate 5 South construction zone just west side arterial mainline approximately 1 mile long connecting major regional highways with already extant parking lots etc...Eugene has enjoyed great growth throughout its history both socially and economically despite occasional challenges posed thereto notably during decades 2000s thru 2010s when rapid gentrification occurred largely impacting inner city areas adjacent thereto creating numerouscode enforcement problems etc...Today much like earlier eras there are many active businesses & cultural organizations thriving here resulting in high qualityof life overall one aspect greatly benefiting Redmond Township adjoining neighboring McMinnville Township viz.: easy accesstojobs et al...Eugine continueswithstanding some current challenges being faced e.g., increasing crime rates resultantfromrecent gentrification opposite central business districtetc.,to maintain vibrant culturaloundersowntown&providing much neededeconomicstimulus vitalfurtheringcommunity vitality
