Eugene, Oregon is a small town located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The town was founded in 1847 by Captain John Cline and his wife Anna, as a trading post on the Josephine River. In 1870, Eugene became the county seat of Multnomah County and was renamed to Eugene after Eugene de Lesseps, an explorer and missionary who helped found the United States east of Mexico City. The first settlers in what is now Eugene were prospectors and miners who arrived in 1847 from California. By 1860, over 100 people had settled in what is today Eugene. By 1865, the city of Eugene had been built on the site of what is now downtown Eugene. In that year, Multnomah County was created from parts of Douglas and Lane Counties and Eugene became its seat. The city grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location near important transportation hubs such as Interstate 5 and U.S. Route 101 (the main north-south route through Oregon). During World War I, Portland Was closed to traffic so that goods could be sent into Germany via Lake Oswego; this allowed for large numbers of local residents to support their military service by working at munitions plants or other factories outside Portland. The war also helped generate new industry in nearby Springfield which would grow into one of Oregon's leading cities during the postwar years. During World War II, much emphasis was placed on recruitment for National Guard units stationed throughout North America because of concerns about Japan's intentions towards East Asia; as a result, more than 4500 men from various northwestern US states worked at various shipyards across Puget Sound while forces were overseas active duty; many later returned home to retire or start families in their original places of residence. Although not all workers returned home safely after Pearl Harbor; most portions OF Northwest eventually did become safe again following Japan's surrender on September 2nd 1945 with few injuries or losses among American citizens living there at that time (eastern Neighboring areas remain vulnerable to terrorist threats today). Eugene, Oregon was founded in 1868 by George Washington Carver. The city is named after General George Armstrong Custer and his regiment, the Seventh Cavalry.
