Eugene is a city in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, United States. It was named for General William T. Sherman and his army who crossed the Columbia River there in 1847. The city grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location at the edge of a fertile agricultural region and its access to transportation including railroads, highways, and irrigation canals. The population reached 100,000 by 1907 and peaked at over 150,000 in 1920. However, rapid growth led to ballooning costs and social unrest that culminated in the city's incorporation as a municipality in 1924. Eugene has since struggled with economic stagnation and declining quality of life. Today, it remains one of the most diverse cities in Oregon with a population of over 330,000 people.
