Eugene, Oregon is a small town on the west coast of Oregon. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. Eugene is also the hometown of Eugene O’Neill and Dwight D. Eisenhower. The town was founded in 1887 by Capt. George Bancroft and his family as a small trading post on the east side of the Willamette River. The area that now makes up Eugene was first populated by Native Americans who used the river for fishing, trade and warfare. By 1850, however, most of what is today Eugene had been developed because of fur traders and miners who came to this area in search for coal, gold and other resources. In 1860, Captain John Alder moved his family from Boston to start a new life in what would become Eugene after purchasing 2/3 of acres near what is now downtown. Over time, many more people moved to Eugene; some due to poverty or persecution from local Indians (the Battle of Emancipation led to large numbers of white people moving into Oregon) while others were lured by its potential as an agricultural center with rich land grants available through annexation by Portland or annexation by cattle ranchers in search of water rights on the Deschutes River system (this area became known as “Mt Bachelor”). In 1892 James Wickersham built Wickersham House as a summer home for himself and his wife Alice Ladd; it still stands today adjacent to Pioneer Square in downtown Eugene. It was here that Wickersham met future Ulysses S Grant while they both traveled through Oregon looking for land grant opportunities during Grant’s presidency (1868-74). After selling Wickersham House in 1902 he authored an account about their experiences titled "Oregon: A Narrative History". In 1908 Edward Maudslay donated three acres southeast of present day Pioneer Square which became one half mile long parade drive named Maudslay Avenue after him along with cash donations totaling $2,500 (). This parade drive served as a ceremonial route leading away from downtown towards Mount Bachelor where annual fairs were held until 1957 when they were transferred to Lewis & Clark Park (now University Park). Today only one block long Maudslay Avenue remains between Church Street and State Street within Downtown Eugene . On July 4th 1901 two brothers – Charles Goodyear Jr., petitioner for incorporation petition #1 (an early effort at creating municipal government), and Harry Goodyear – founded Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., later renamed Tyco International Ltd., at 801 NNW Broadway which then became home to their company offices until 1991 when they relocated across the street from City Hall building onto 5th Ave NW . In 1916 Goodyear bought 160 acres adjacent SW corner Pinehurst Road NE from Presiden
