In 1892, Eugene, Oregon gunsmith and entrepreneur Fredrick Ball was the first to offer a choke type of shotgun known as the "Gun-Choke." The Gun-Choke was a shotgun with a series of metal plates that prevented the gun from firing when closed. Ball's invention became popular in America, and is still used today. In 1934, the American National Rifle Association (ANRA) created their own model of the Gun-Choke known as the Model 1A1. This model allowed shooters to fire any shotgun without having to close the choke tube. From 1934 until 1968, shotguns manufactured by Remington Arms Company were also chokes compatible with other manufacturers' shotguns. However, this ceased production afterRemington announced its intention to produce only one specific type of choke for all shotguns manufactured thereafter. From 1968 until 1994, all firearms made by Remington Arms Company were choked using their standard Remington No2 choke design which limited output and function in some models

On January 1st 1897 – over 100 years ago today – Eugene became incorporated as a city with a population exceeding 5000 In 1912 Eugene became part of Multnomah County after it was combined with Clackamas County In 1950 Clarence Tiller was elected Mayor
