This prosperity continued until around 1930 when oil prices started dropping and many businesses closed down because they could not compete with oil companies who were using more expensive labor methods than local farmers could afford. Downtown Dallas reverted back to its humble beginnings during World War II when many people left for military service or went off to fight in other countries; however, business revived soon afterwards thanks to veterans returning home (and their families) bringing back skills related to running businesses such as marketing, accounting, etcetera. Despite experiencing some financial difficulties during World War II (due to reduced trade),Dallas continued to grow through economic development until 1970 when it lost its status as an incorporated municipality within Umpqua County effective January 1st that year due to changes in government structure within Oregon following passage of Measure 97 which amended state Constitution to make metropolitan areas less independent from county government control
The settlement of Dallas, Oregon began in 1879 when a group of Mormon settlers from Utah set out from Salt Lake City to explore the area. By 1881, the Mormons had completed their buildout of what is now Dallas and had established a small town named for their new leader, Brigham Young. The town quickly grew and by 1886 it had reached its current size with an population of around 100 people. During the early years of the 20th century, Dallas was a major center for commerce and industry in Oregon. One notable company that operated in Dallas during this time was the Western Electric Company. The company developed electric lighting and power systems throughout Oregon and also manufactured radios, automobiles, and other consumer goods. In 1922, Wichita Falls Oil Company bought Western Electric's share in Dallas for $1 million dollars. Wichita Falls soon became one of the largest oil companies in America thanks to its production capabilities in Texas and Oregon.
