Corvallis, Oregon is a city in Yamhill County, Oregon, United States. The population was 8,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Yamhill County. The original town site was located on the banks of the Willamette River and was named for General David Corvallis who led American forces during the Mexican–American War. The name "Corvallis" is derived from the word "corn". The first settler in what would become Corvallis was John McLoughlin who arrived in 1846. He founded a ferry landing on tributary of the Willamette River just upstream from present-day downtown Corvallis. By 1850, there were nine families living in and around what became known as McLoughlin's Landing. In 1854, another group of pioneers arrives to found what would become downtown Corvallis with James Higginson as its first mayor. Higginson purchased 4 acres (1 km2) of land along the banks of the Willamette River from David Waddell for $60 cash and started building what would eventually become City Hall and other civic buildings. In 1860, John Cavanaugh builds a sawmill on his farmstead east of downtown Corvallis for local logging operations which continued until 1865 when mills closed because of lack of available lumber resources in America due to wars going on back then . In 1865 Jameson Dyer founded Dyer Manufacturing Company that manufactured corduroys and other items including shoes by convict labour while others built corrugated tin roofs at various locations around town before disbanding in 1924 . By 1870 there were over 100 people living in downtown Corvallis with most working within Grist Mill & Sawmill where they raised livestock such as chickens or pigs; some also worked part-time at nearby farms or businesses such as J P Litton’s store which had opened adjacent to Grist Mill about two years earlier . In 1872 Union Pacific Railroad begins construction through Yamhill County linking Portland with Seattle via Salem then Spokane via Hood River Junction making it possible for farmers to get their goods directly to market rather than having to go through towns like McMinnville or Bend DowntownCorvalli
