By 1886, there had been constructed an rudimentary railroad system linking Portland with Salem; educational institutions such as Multnomah County Agricultural College (now Portland State University) had been established; churches had started to be built; and some ranchers had begun to settle in central Oregon. During World War I (1914-18), Corvallis played an important role as one of America’s main military hubs for supplying troops stationed overseas. The city also grew rapidly thanks to its role as an industrial center for weapons production during World War II (1939-1945).
