The town was platted around July 1st, 1848 when Judge James Halsey laid out a blockhouse square on high ground commanding an excellent view over all parts of Benton County including present day Corvallis Junction where two roads cross each other – one leading northeast to Grants Pass and west to Medford; also included within this square were three buildings: jail, courthouse or probate court house, meeting house or schoolhouse.
