In 1876, the United States acquired Oregon from Mexico. The new state was named for General George C. Marshall, who had served as President of the United States in the early 1860s. The area now known as Oregon was first inhabited by the Hidatsa and possibly other Native American groups. In 1795, Spanish explorers discovered a route to the Pacific Northwest through what is now Idaho and Oregon. They called this region Californias because they thought it would be easy to find another route to Asia if they failed in their attempt to explore North America. Oregon became a U.S territory on February 14, 1846. On July 5, 1850, Congress created Provisional Government of Oregon under Andrew Johnson with authority over all land east of the Columbia River including present-day Washington and most of California. In 1853, Congress passed an act creating a territorial government for Oregon based on survey results dating back to 1848 and approved by President James Kiefer Adams on December 1st. The provisional government soon encountered difficulties due to popular support for Whitman among majority American voters in northeastern Oregon while also experiencing strong opposition from British residents in southeast Portland (the current city). On January 16th 1861, after two years of campaigning by John Atherton and others within the Provisional Government, Whitman was elected Governor of Oregon following his victory in a gubernatorial election that month held pursuant to special provisions set forth in the Organic Act of 1840 which granted voting rights based on property ownership rather than race or ethnicity; this made Whitmans victory possible despite strong opposition from many eastern Democrats who saw him as too pro-British. Whitman led an aggressive expansionist policy towards neighboring countries such as California which he believed were taking advantage of American resources without contributing anything useful back to society; he also wanted power over water supplies so that he could better control trade with China He ordered militia units into East Wenatchee County during winter conditions in 1863 when local landowners refused permission for them to build winter homes near their farms; these events helped lead to increased tensions between Whitmans administration and local farmers leading up to the Civil War Oregon entered into secession from United States on April 15 1870 after failed negotiations between federal officials and representatives from several western states regarding issues such as slavery (the slave trade being illegal under federal law at that time) tariffs (Oregon opposed tariffs), Congressional representation (necessary because no state had representation within both Houses of Congress), annexation by Canada ( permissible but controversial because Canada had been part of British Empire since 1867) On November 3rd 1870 Ulysses S Grant accepted Kansas application for admission into Union along with Nebraska, Nevada Territory & Arizona This left only three remaining Western US Territories: New Mexico Territory west of Rio Grande River & Arizona Territory southwardto include Tucson
