Oregon is a state in the Western United States. It borders Nevada to the east, California to the north, and Arizona to the west. The Oregon Coast line is just south of the state's eastern border. The first humans in what is now Oregon were probably hunters and gatherers who traveled along the coast during warm summer months. In 1817, Spanish explorer José de Urrea named a section of present-day Oregon "Isla de los Cascos" after two small groups of his beaked whales he sighted while exploring Galápagos Islands off Ecuador's coast. The discovery of gold on nearby Willamette River in 1851 led hordes of fortune seekers into what is now central and southern Oregon, where vast amounts of gold were found ending up subsidizing many small towns and villages that grew up around it. By 1861, when Congress created Multnomah County from parts of Deschutes County and Clackamas County, most of central and southern Oregon had been incorporated into new counties as part of efforts by local officials to make landowning families more prosperous by annexing areas they considered unproductive or too remote for farming or ranching. However, even as late as 1930s there remained large tracts within much larger counties not yet annexed which made it difficult for people living outside those boundaries to get an idea about their community's history or culture. Until World War II much attention was paid to military activity around Portland; however, since then there has been a growing focus on cultural attractions such as art galleries and historical murals located throughout town while preservation work continues at numerous old buildings including Butte House Museum & Art Gallery (founded in 1907), Lents Hotel (1872), Congregationalist churches (19th century), Josephine Mansion (1882) – all still standing today –and several banks that used to house cannons during American Civil War days before being converted into apartments/residences: First National Bank (1862), Second National Bank (1865),enormous Merchants Trust Company Building (1892). In recent years there has also been increasing interest in Corvallis itself with properties like Pioneer Courthouse Square redevelopment project completed in 2009 which added retail space along with public art installations including giant rock paintings donated by artist Chuck Close based on his sketchbook illustrations from that era depicting life on the frontier near Salem; Pioneer Courthouse Square was designated a national historic landmark in 1987 honoring those responsible for its design and construction–the first time this had ever happened in Eugene’s downtown area As more residents move closer to urban centers jobs have become available closerinby making Corvallis one of the fastest growing cities within Oregon; restaurants like Ruby Tuesday’s moving outwards towards city center opening up space inside shopping malls located eastside near freeway exit 182A giving rise to Anheuser Busch Brewery Blocks Place development adjacent thereto housing several hundred residential units In addition there are continuing efforts being made by city leaders Downtown Core Strategy Plan calls for redeveloping both Southeast Thurston Street between High Street Bridge over Willamette River Gorge Northward into new neighborhoods called Gateway Village Northwest Hawthorne Boulevard Southward forming an inverse triangle bounded by Northwest Thurston Street MetroLink station Northeast Interstate 5 corridor housing an estimated 1 million people over 10 years
The town of Corvallis, Oregon was founded in 1847 by the party of settlers who named it for General James K. Polk. The first store opened in 1851 and the town became a thriving coal mining village. In 1861, the United States Army established Fort Eugene to guard against Mexican incursions into Oregon. The fort was abandoned in 1865, but when the state of Oregon accepted California as its new neighbor in 1868, Fort Eugene again came into use as an arsenal and military post. In 1890, Corvallis became a city and has since grown to be one of the largest cities in Oregon with a population over 100,000 people.
