Corvallis, Oregon is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon and the county seat of Multnomah County. The population was 54,813 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Willamette River, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Portland and 30 miles (48 km) south of Seattle. The first European settler in what is now Corvallis was George Webber in 1851. The town site was surveyed by Captain George Vancouver on October 14, 1851, as part of his journey from Astoria to claim land along the Columbia River for United States purposes. Webber named his new settlement "Webberstown", after himself and his British friend John William Colborne. Webber's plat included a village center with a sawmill and two stores; he also developed a country estate west of town which became known as "Belleview". By 1860, however, many settlers had relocated to present-day Multnomah County because of available lands along the river or because they had been offered grants from Ulysses S. Grant in his Western territories initiative. In 1862–1863, during the American Civil War, several hundred residents left Belleview to join Union forces against Confederate forces near Eugene; most returned home before hostilities ended. In 1865 Corvallis became part of newly created Multnomah County; it had a population of 534 when it formed according to US Census Bureau figures published that year. The City Council was organized in 1872 and its first mayor was Hosea Stevens; council meetings were held at an old mill building on Division Street until 1876 when they moved to new quarters at 1119 SW Fourth Avenue after being selected by ballot among residents who responded to an ad placed in The Oregonian newspaper calling for civic improvement projects around town eligible for government funding As early as 1888 there were plans for industrial development within what is now downtown Corvallis – plans which never came to fruition due to lack of money or interest from investors despite repeated petitions from citizens including Mayor Harry Wessels In 1951–1952 construction began on Willamette Dam – one of America's largest hydroelectric power plants – providing flood protection for Portland and neighboring cities while still allowing employs over 150 people directly upstream from dam where their jobs generated income that supported local businesses . During this time many homes were built across both sides of Willamette River adjacent to dam making it difficult if not impossible for people downstream whether they wanted groceries delivered or water turned off just so housewives could go outside and pee . However much has changed since then with more than $50 million dollars invested into downtown redevelopment over the last few decades creating thousands high-end jobsites all around downtown!

In 1861, Corvallis became part of Washington Territory when that state was formed from parts of Oregon and Washington. By 1870, most of what would become Multnomah County had been acquired by Portland, so Corvallis came under its jurisdiction for just a few years before being annexed back into Multnomah County.
